Corpus Libris

I get lots of emails from dinofans — Love Them! — and recently, I’ve been hearing from young construction enthusiasts about MONSTERS ON MACHINES. This one, though, made me laugh out loud. It’s from Candace Ryan, picture book author and mom. She sent me this picture of her son, and also posted it on her blog. The picture will take you there…

Tomorrow I’m off to Sunnycrest Elementary in Lake Stevens. They’ve been going through a lot of construction themselves lately. The monsters will fit right in.

Writing is Construction. We create the blueprints, clear the ground, use the tools we have available, and build our many-storied houses. And then we get photos of little boys with Gorbert heads.

My advice to writers? Wear a hard hat.

  • A hard hat? :) Hmm, maybe a hard hat on a soft heart then!

  • I love that! Yes, all good stories have Heart. The hard hat is for all those accidents that can happen — like when your tools take on a life of their own, or a chunk of what you’re building tumbles down on you.

Even rollicking, rhyming, good-timing picture books need Heart. Several years ago when I got a new computer, my son pulled my “Where’s the Heart?” note off the old monitor and put it on the new one. I can’t imagine getting better validation that what I do is important.

My advice to writers — Keep that hard hat on when looking up paralyzes you, but yes, yes, give your creations Heart.
