Share a Story - Shape a Future

Monday, March 9, is my mom’s birthday. She was 20 when I was born, and didn’t always get the support she needed to raise her kids, but one of the things she really excelled at was reading to us. She loved books, often losing herself in them, oblivious to anyone or anything around her. Her modeling of reading, her reading to us, and her resourceful ways of supplying us with books in a rural town that had no library made readers out of us. I’ll be celebrating her life on the 9th, and also celebrating the beginning of a special literacy week I’m happy to announce, and happy to help promote.

My friends, and the teachers I support through my classes, through my Writing With Kids blog, and through my author presentations know how passionate I am about literacy. I speak at conferences, schools, library meetings, reading foundations, and literacy nights. My years as a school librarian, teacher, mom, and children’s author have given me a first-hand look at the power of story in the lives of children.

Share a Story — Shape a Future is a blog event created for everyone who shares my passion for literacy. Check out the schedule of postings, the ideas, activities, and inspiration that will empower all of us to promote literacy in practical, usable ways.

Speaking of bloggers, here are a couple places you can find me this week…

My librarian friend Jone (Ms. Mac to many) has a delightful blog, which always brings back my school librarian days. Jone and I see each other at conferences and events here and there (she always seems to be the driving force behind them), and she interviewed me this month on Check it Out!

Suzanne Lieurance of Book Bites for Kids will be talking with me on Blog Talk Radio March 5, 2 PM Central Time. That’s noon for us out here on the west coast. Join me then, or listen to it later!

And for you writers and teachers out there — Don’t miss this conference! You can even get continuing education credits while hanging out with incredible agents, editors, authors, and illustrators!
