About Deb and this business of teaching writing…

I’m a children’s author with a couple decades of teaching experience — music, classroom, library. I created and co-directed an arts-based school, and I teach continuing education courses. I also drive a soccer van full of kids, sing with my hubby (Brothers Four member Karl Olsen), bike, walk our silly mini-schnauzer Ollie, unicycle, and tuck in my nonstop readerkid, marimba player, tapdancing Kaj, my princess, writerkid, and go-get-em soccer girl Sandra, and our sweet-singing wild-man Jean. Take a peek in my Diary to see pictures!

Oh, the writing-teaching… Well, it first started when my fifth-grade teacher submitted a poem of mine, from her prompt “Happiness Is…,” to a student anthology. My name was in a book! I was hooked. Teaching writing has been my focus and passion since working on my master’s project 20 years ago. Now I get to reach out to parents and teachers, support them, and give them a venue to support each other. They’re my heros, but it’s the kids I love.
